Global Consumer Awareness – Survey on Consumer Awareness
Global Consumer Awareness – Survey on Consumer Awareness
Consumer awareness is a term which means that consumers are aware of products or services, its characteristics and the other marketing P’s (place to buy, price, and promotion). A modern declaration about consumer’s rights was first made in the United States of America in 1962, where four basic consumer rights (choice, information, safety and to be heard) were recognized. March 15 is now celebrated as the World Consumer Rights Day.

Enactment of Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was one of the most important steps taken to protect the interests of consumers. The provision of the Act came into force, with effect from July 1, 1987. The act recognizes consumer’s right to seek redresses and right to consumer education.
As a part of ISA activity VBpians conducted a survey in collaboration with students in USA to ascertain the level of awareness about the rights and duties of a consumer in both the countries. A questionnaire was designed for this purpose by the Indian counterparts and the students got the same filled by consumers in their neighbourhood. Some of the questions were as follows:

  • Do you keep the bills of stuff you buy carefully?
  • Are you brand-conscious?
  • Do you check MRP, Manufacturing Date, and Expiry Date while buying a product?

The students tabulated the data and drew comparisons for the each question between the Indian consumers and the US consumers. for e.g. it was found that

  • More people keep their bills safe in India than the USA.
  • People of India are more brand conscious than people in USA. etc

The given data was depicted in the form of graphs followed by a discussion between the students of both the countries through Skype. The result showed that students of India are more brand conscious and unhesitatingly respond to catchy offers when compared to the US consumers. However in most cases they are equally aware of their rights as consumers, as their counterparts. In some cases such as being able to convince shopkeepers that you have been cheated or insisting on a bill of purchases made however the people of US scored higher than the Indians.
Thus we can conclude that people in India are becoming more cautious about the goods and services they purchase and organized and systematic movements to safeguard the interest of consumers are gaining strength. Also the laws protecting the rights of the consumers need to be implemented more stringently.
